It was a hot humid summer morning in February 2018. We travelled in the Land Cruiser for a few hours in thick fog until we reached our hunting destination in search of my dream fallow trophy stag. Daylight was breaking as we arrived, it was quite wet as they had two inches of rain the night before so vehicle access was limited.

Time we set off, I put on my Ridgeline camlite hunting boots got my pack organized and Howa 6.5 Creedmoor rifle and headed for the hills. We walked for about two hours looking for any signs of deer. No tracks and no rubs were found so we sat down and did some glassing out into the distance, but still nothing. Walking down to a dam to my surprise we found some fresh tracks then as we kept on moving we found some fresh brush that had been rubbed. As we walked the timberline we spotted two mature fallow stags the wind was against us so we had to backtrack and circled around them.

Coming in from above them with the wind in our face we waited a few minutes then spotted the stags as they came out from behind the thick brush. I loaded my rifle and stalked to 150 meters and took the shot; the fallow stag fell to the ground.

What a tense moment it was certainly an unforgettable hunting experience.
